The first round of the GB4 Championship has finished. With Jason and ADM both making their debut in the series, there was much to look forward to, and lots more to learn as the weekend progressed.
The format of the weekend began with testing on Thursday and Friday. Returning to Donington Park after just one day in the car at this particular track meant that testing was very valuable, and with help from F3 driver Roman Bilinski on Thursday, the team made the most of the testing, closing the gap to the fastest drivers significantly over the two days.
In each live stream, Jason was featured in the demo lap around Donington Park Circuit. Another great addition to this year is the livestreams, and even more so the professionalism of them. Jason got plenty of coverage, including a driver interview before Race 3, so after reading up be sure to check out the live streams of all three races.
Saturday is when the official race weekend began, starting with qualifying in the morning. In just 15 minutes, drivers must warm up their tires, and set two fast laps which dictate the grid for all three races, making it the most stressful and important part of the weekend. Unfortunately Jason was not able to translate his testing speed in qualifying, setting a 1:28.7, just barely a second off pole, putting him in 18th for Races 1 and 3, and 19th for Race 2, all 18 minute races. Race 1 started off impressively, with Jason picking up 4 positions in the first lap, showing his race craft in full force. Through the race he picked up two more positions, however as he was closing in on the battle for 8th, he dropped a wheel on the exit of Redgate losing a position and losing precious seconds to the battle ahead. He finished P13 and just a few car lengths behind the battle ahead, holding the 6th fastest lap as well.
Sunday, the final day of the four day battle held Race 2 and 3. Starting in P19, this race set the tone for the remainder of the weekend. After gaining 3 positions off the line he was forced off the track by a car he was alongside, and was relegated to the rear of the field to finish the first lap. After 16 minutes of racing he dispatched 6 cars and regained 14th place to finish the race. Race 3 was far more uneventful for the majority of the race. After struggling to get past a car for 13th, the front tires began to wear from aero wash, and Jason lost two positions. On the last lap, Jason was battling hard for 15th when contact, through no fault of his own, resulted in him and another driver not finishing the race.
Although suffering the consequences of a poor qualifying for the entire weekend, Jason and the team leave feeling optimistic with his pace and ability to race well.
In just three weeks time GB4 returns to racing at Silverstone Circuit for Round 2 of the championship. The team has already built a plan for the weeks in between now and Silverstone, and are confident in a far better showing for the second round.
